How we make our greeting cards

How we make our greeting cards

by Andreea Nemes

Our greeting cards always start at the design phase. There are plenty of places where you can buy a stock standard 'Happy Birthday' card. Not with us!

We always start off by asking questions. 'Wouldn't it be funny if [insert hilarious event]?' 'What kind of card would I want to get?' 'What does [insert holiday] make me think of?' One of these question sessions led us to our Valentine's Day cards, which change every year. Each year we come up with a general theme and collaborate with two local artists or illustrators to put their own design touch on it. Then we do the printing ourselves. We like to have the cards play off each other. One year the theme was 'pairs' and we had a card design that showed things in pairs - socks, salt and pepper shakers, cheese and crackers, etc. Another year, one card said 'You are my moon' and the other said 'You are my sun'. The same goes for all of our occasion or event cards. You won't find anything boring but you're guaranteed to find some cracking puns or clever executions of out of the box ideas.

Once a design is settled we choose the best paper stock to print on, make the plates, choose an envelope and we're away. To keep our cards unique, we use a die to cut them with rounded corners and print our logo on the back. Are cards are sold online, in the studio or sometimes at various craft shows around the city.
